Theseus' Guardian Angel

A visit from mom's spirit, Theseus' Guardian Angel; a prelude to my son's hospital admission

Theseus' Angel

A Familiar Fragrance

Last Thursday night, my husband and I were sitting in the living room with my youngest daughter and my son Theseus. The three of us were just talking and watching television; simply hanging out after a long, but peaceful day. All had been going well throughout the entire day and everyone was in good spirits.

As the night progressed, I suddenly caught a whiff of perfume out of nowhere, which piqued my interest. As the aroma seemed to grow more potent and began surrounding me, I embarked on my investigation asking everyone else if they had sprayed anything and if they smelled it also. At first, no one knew what I was talking about, but as time passed, everyone was smelling it. I went around exploring the house for the origin of the smell and absolutely nothing in any room smelled like this perfume. It could not be explained.

The fragrance was certainly a familiar smell and was, in fact, a fragrance that my mom often wore. It was one which I had given to her prior to her passing. You see, mom never bought any perfume for herself and would consistently ask if she could use some of mine. Of course, most of the time she would use it more than I would, so I would just end up telling her that she could have mine. The funny thing is, we had an ongoing, inside joke about it and would laugh about it frequently. That night, we all came agreed that it undoubtedly had to be my mom letting us know she was around. But, we didn't realize what it was that made her want us to know this so badly, until the following day.

A Sudden Turn Of Events

Friday morning, we woke up at 5am as usual. Theseus was just babbling and laughing as I prepared his new formula and administered his morning medicines via his g-tube. He was actually more vocal this morning than usual, playing with his toys and just "talking" away. Once my husband was ready, we left to take him to work. In the car, Theseus was babbling away and in such a happy mood. When he and I arrived back home, he played and we practiced sitting as usual. He watched his favorite cartoon and took a nap. Nothing was out of the ordinary in any way.

When it was time for my husband to get off of work, we packed up in the car and made our way to greet him. This has always been our regular routine; one that Theseus thoroughly enjoys most days, unless his belly is bothering him from the g-tube feedings. However, on this particular day, he napped the entire way there and back. When we made it back home, he began to fuss. This wasn't his normal fussiness and I thought maybe he just got too warm from the sun beaming in through the windows of the car.

We tried cooling him down a bit, but when his temperature didn't seem to return to normal, I became very worried. He just seemed to be acting out of character. So, I decided to take his temperature. He was registering at 101.9 degrees and due to his condition, at 100.4 we were instructed to take him straight to the ER. This is exactly what we did. My husband and I grabbed all of his bags, hopped in the car and made our way as quickly and safely as possible to the hospital.

On the way to there, I was so afraid of what it could be. My mind went through a million scenarios and possibilities. I always worry so much on a daily basis about him, because I know how very fragile life is, especially with all that has happened with him already. I do trust in my God and my faith is strong, but I do occasionally have moments of fear and this was one of them. When I began to cry, my attention was called to a passing car. The first three numbers of the license plate read 7-7-7. Angel number 7-7-7 means "Trust the Divine". It is a call to release all fear of the unknown and control. It asks us to trust the divine and know that all is happening for a purpose. (See my post about Angel Numbers...coming soon)

By the time we reached the hospital, his temperature was up to 103 degrees. The doctor and nurses worked quickly to get his temp down and began testing to find out what was going on. Once, they had determined that he had an infection, they admitted us and thus began our journey to treat it and get him well again.

Bedside Matter

Once we were moved to a room in the NICU, the nurses continued working with my son to treat his infection. Many of the nurses that we had come to know well during our first two and a half months stay, were taking care of him once again. Some of them popped in just to see how much he had grown since he was there as a newborn. It was a bitter-sweet meeting with some of the most amazing people I have had the privilege to work with in my life.

Sunday night, the room was quiet, aside from the television. We were just about to turn in and call it a night and Theseus had already fallen asleep. No one else was in the room, at least not that we could see. Suddenly, the IV tubing moved and clanked up against the support pole, as if someone had bumped into it while walking near the baby bed. It swung vigorously for a few moments while my husband and I sat there in a bit of shock. I asked him, "Did you just see that?" and he replied, "I sure did!".

Monday afternoon came around and it happened again, in broad daylight. Again, the IV tubing swung and clanked as if someone were walking right by our son at his bed. Shortly after, was when we were told that the cultures had come back negative for infection and that it cleared fantastically with no issues and his broviac line could remain in place. We stayed until Wednesday afternoon to get the two negative cultures required, along with the 48 hours free and clear time afterwards, in order to be certain he would be good to go.

Theseus' Guardian Angel: Conclusion

We are now home and I am administering his antibiotics for the remaining week of treatment via a special pump and IV syringe through his broviac line. He is doing wonderful, which is a blessing from God above. Most of the time, these infections lead to removal and replacement of the line and a much longer stay in the hospital. I have no doubt in my mind that he is highly protected and that my mom is Theseus' guardian angel. This wasn't the first time I had experienced her presence and I know it won't be the last. I know she is here with us and is watching over us every single day.

Do You Believe?

Whether or not you believe in an afterlife, heaven or what have you...I can definitely share some "ghost" stories that have occurred over my lifetime. I do believe that there are spirits/energies that we can not see with human eyes, because I have encountered them. I have been visited many times, while awake and in my dreams, by energies (positive and negative) that I have known over the years, some I have never met before in my life, some just passing by and some with a more sinister intention. (See my ghost stories...coming soon)

You see, we are all energy...this is a fact. If you know anything at all about energy, then you are familiar with The Law of the Conservation of Energy, which states: "Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; rather, it can only be transformed or transferred from one form to another." (See my post about energy...coming soon)
