Holding Us Through Our Pain

How Spirit Is Holding Us Through Our Pain

My son has been through a lot, as y'all may well know. He has a nurse that comes once a week to change his dressing for his broviac line. It's a special, protective bandage that goes over the line to keep it secure and from getting infected. This line goes into the major artery in his leg and allows him to receive his nutrition intravenously, which his has to have in order to live. They call it Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) and lipids. It also allows them to do his bi-weekly blood draws to keep up with how the TPN and lipids are doing and if they need to make adjustments to the amounts.

The past few weeks have been difficult for them to pull blood from his line, which is completely normal over a period of time. However, since it has stopped producing blood for us, they have had to draw blood through another vein in his arm and today via finger stick. Getting his blood drawn is imperative for his health and wellbeing. And even though I know it hurts him and he cries, I have to allow it so that he can be well. I don't ever want him to hurt or to cry, but I have to let it happen. So, I hold him in my arms, cuddle him tight, hum to him, kiss him, and reassure him that everything will be alright. I tell him just a little longer and you'll be just fine.

In that moment today, I thought about how Spirit does that with us. Sometimes we have pain in our lives, but when that pain comes, Spirit holds us, kisses us, and is there to comfort us while we endure it. Spirit doesn't take the pain away, because it's just a part of the process or consequence, but that love and comfort is always there with us, as we endure it. You see, pain is not a punishment. Spirit doesn't cause it and can't prevent it or stop it because, it is a part of life. But, we are comforted, whether it is directly from Spirit or from the universe sending us an "angel" to help up in those times of need.
